May Day is dedicated to workers. Thousands of people of all nationalities marched side by side in response to the new anti-immigrant law in Arizona, from Union Square down Broadway to Foley Square, near City Hall, where they were addressed by immigrant and worker advocates as well as a few city officials expressing support. As you can see in the photos, many groups were represented: immigrants from all Latin American countries, from Asia, and from other parts of the world, as well as labor unions and religious groups. Similar marches were held all over the USA: in Washington DC, Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, and 90 other cities, the largest turnout since May Day of 2006.
“And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.” —Leviticus 19: 33-34.
