Update December 2009: The campaign described below did not bear sufficient fruit, so now Caliope Bookstore continues its life on the sidewalk of Dyckman Street near the store which is now closed. READ ABOUT IT HERE.

Librería Caliope is not only one of the last surviving Spanish-language bookstores in all of New York City (and one of the only places in the USA to get Dominican Republic books that are not available at Amazon.com or anywhere else), but it is also a cultural institution and gathering place, a vital resource to the Dominican and Hispanic communities of Washington Heights and beyond, as is evident from the many tributes referenced just below.

PROGRESS REPORT: LIBRERIA CALIOPE AND CALIOPE HISPANICA

The drawing to pick the winners of the raffle took place Sunday the 19th of July on the TV program Qué pasa Nueva York, produced by the announcer Nazario Brea, broadcast by Time Warner Cable Chanal 35 at 10:00pm. The prizes were awarded by a panel composed of the lawyer Frank Knipping, Julio Alvarado of the Audubon Partnership and José González.

The winning numbers were:

third prize, # 1235, claimed by Ramón Garrido,
second prize, # 3207, claimed by Bernardo Rodríguez,
first prize, # 0389, was not claimed since the ticket was returned by Nandy Tatis without having been sold.

Since there was no first-prize winner, we have decided to have another raffle. The new drawing will be Sunday August 2nd on the same program at the same time (10:00pm). There will be a new prize, two prepaid credit cards, each with value of $350.

ALL TICKETS ARE VALID FOR THE NEW DRAWING

If you would like to buy tickets or help with ticket sales, please contact:

Diogenes Abreu, 212.822.8322,
Julio Alvarado, 212.544.2400 ext 15,
Cesar González, 917.440.7346.
As of today we have raised $13,500 with the raffle and we expect about another $600 more since several of the ticket sellers haven't yet delivered their sales revenue.

Above all, we want to thank you for the support that you always have offered us as customers or supporting our cultural activities. As you know, our books store is temporarily closed due to economic difficulties. To be able to get out of this sitution and reopen our door, a group of friends has taken the iniciative to organize a raffle to raise the necessary funds.

This raffle will take place, with the support of Quisqueya Tour and American Business Travel, Sunday July 12th on Nazario Brea's “Que pasa Nueva York”, broadcast on Time Warner Cable Channel 35 at 10:00pm.

We ask that all friends of Caliope join with us and take part in the sale of tickets for this raffle. If you can't help with sales of tickets, we hope you can participate by purchasing.
